One of Canada’s leading grocery industry publications has inducted Toronto business leader Boris Serebryany into its prestigious Grocery Business Hall of Fame, recognizing a lifetime of leadership, innovation, and service to Canadian families. To mark the occasion, the publication’s Editorial Director visited Upper Crust’s Toronto headquarters to personally present the award to Serebryany. The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals whose vision, leadership, and lifetime achievements have made a lasting impact on Canada’s grocery industry.
Serebryany’s story reflects the immigrant experience in Canada. Arriving from the former Soviet Union in 1982 with his wife Rita and their baby daughter Carmela, he came with a drive for freedom and opportunity. That perspective became central to his approach as a business leader: solve difficult problems, keep moving forward, and support the growth of others around you.
Widely regarded as a pioneering entrepreneur, engineer, and industry builder, Serebryany is credited with transforming the production and distribution of bakery products within Canada’s grocery sector. His innovations helped modernize the way fresh bakery products are manufactured and delivered, making high-quality baked goods more accessible to millions of Canadian families. His life and career are reflected in one of his favourite sayings: “make the impossible possible.”
As CEO, Serebryany has steered Upper Crust, and its Allied Group of Companies, to become some of the most successful bakery manufacturing businesses in North America. He led the expansion of the businesses through technical ambition, manufacturing discipline, and a refusal to accept conventional limits. Along the way, he helped create opportunities for thousands of team members to build rewarding careers and share in the success of the businesses they helped build.
Beyond business, Serebryany and his family have made significant contributions to the community through philanthropic support for organizations and initiatives including the Jewish Russian Community Center, the United Jewish Appeal, Humber River Health Foundation, the Grocery Foundation, the Soccer for All Legacy Program, and numerous community, youth, sports, veteran and school nutrition programs.
